Open vs Enclosed Car Transport

Most cars ship open. Enclosed costs more, hauls fewer units, and is not always sitting on your route that week.

Start with the vehicle, not the brochure

If the car is a daily driver you park outside tonight, open car transport is usually the right equipment. If it is a freshly painted classic, a low exotic, or a car you would not leave in a hailstorm, enclosed car transport is the conversation — when a covered trailer can take the height on that lane.

This page is the comparison. The two service pages stay for people who already know which trailer they want. $0 is charged today. You approve the carrier before dispatch.

Transit bands themselves live on how long car shipping takes. Enclosed does not magically cut the miles. It can add wait if the next covered trailer is two days behind the open truck.

When open is enough

Open carriers move most of the cars in the United States. The vehicle is strapped and inspected. It will see sun, rain, and highway dust the same way it does on a road trip. That is expected, not a defect.

Open is the default on Houston, Dallas, and most Texas household moves. It is also the usual choice on long published lanes such as Houston to Los Angeles.

When enclosed is the better conversation

Choose enclosed when the finish or value makes road exposure the wrong risk: restored paint, convertibles you store covered, low-clearance exotics, or a car that will not start and also needs a softer load. See classic and luxury if that is the vehicle type.

Enclosed still uses door-to-door meeting points. A covered trailer is often larger and fussier on tight streets than an open hauler. Los Angeles hills and New York lots can need a wider meeting street either way.

Price, without a fake average

We do not publish “enclosed usually costs $X more nationwide.” The quote adds enclosed when you select it. If no enclosed carrier can take the height or the lane, we say so instead of inventing a dispatch.

Inoperable is a separate add-on. You can ship an inoperable daily driver open with a winch. You can also request enclosed plus inoperable. Both choices belong on the quote before you book. Read car shipping cost and inoperable vehicle transport.

How to decide in one minute

  1. Would you park this car outside at the destination for a week? If yes, start with open.
  2. Is the paint, height, or value the reason you are shipping instead of driving? Ask for enclosed.
  3. Need it sooner more than you need a cover? Open usually has more trucks. See expedited.

Frequently asked questions

Is open transport safe?

Open transport is the standard method for most operable cars, SUVs, and trucks. The vehicle is secured and inspected. It will see normal weather.

Can I switch from open to enclosed after I see the quote?

Yes — ask before you approve the carrier. Enclosed availability is still lane-specific.

Does enclosed always exist on my route?

No. If a covered trailer is not available, we will say so rather than invent a date.
