Open or Enclosed Car Transport

Open transport is a trailer without a roof. The car is exposed to weather and road grit the way cars on the interstate already are. It is the usual method for a daily driver. Enclosed transport is a covered trailer. On a Bigfella Direct Quote it adds $380 when you select it.

When open is the right default

Commuter cars, ordinary SUVs, and trucks you already park outside. You still photograph them and note existing chips. Open does not mean careless. It means uncovered.

When to talk about enclosed

Classic, exotic, and high-value vehicles, fresh paint, or a car you do not want in the weather. The decision guide for those vehicles is shipping a classic or high-value vehicle. Enclosed equipment is less common than open, so the window can be narrower. Say you need it before a carrier is assigned, not after an open truck has arrived.

What enclosed does not include

It does not replace carrier vetting, the bill of lading, or your photos. It does not change the rule that personal items stay out of the car. It is not required for an ordinary EV. See EV versus gas.

Questions people ask

Can I switch to enclosed after I book open?

Yes, as a change to the shipment. The price changes with it. Price Lock does not freeze an open quote onto an enclosed job.

Is the top spot on an open trailer worse?

It is more exposed to weather. You should not count on choosing the rack position. If exposure is the concern, price enclosed.

Does soft-sided enclosed count?

Ask what equipment the carrier will use when they are assigned. “Enclosed” on a quote should mean a covered trailer, and you should confirm that before you approve the carrier.
