Car Shipping Insurance: What Coverage Actually Means

Cargo insurance is the assigned motor carrier’s policy, not a blanket policy from the broker. Bigfella Auto Express checks that assigned carriers show cargo coverage of $150,000 or more, plus active USDOT and MC authority, before dispatch. That check is not a promise that every scratch, personal item, or mechanical issue is paid.

What the check covers

Bigfella’s own authority is the brokerage: USDOT 4133743 and MC-1583439. The truck that arrives belongs to the carrier you approve, and that carrier has its own numbers. Look those up on the FMCSA SAFER site if you want to confirm the name. Ask for the certificate if you want the insurer’s wording, the limit, and the exclusions.

A bill of lading is the condition record at pickup and again at delivery. Damage that is already written down at pickup is pre-existing. Note anything new before you sign the delivery copy. Photos in daylight support that form. They do not replace it.

What it does not cover by default

Personal belongings left in the car are not cargo. Remove them. A mechanical problem that was already in the vehicle is not automatically a transport claim. Open transport exposes the car to ordinary weather and road dust. That exposure is a reason some people choose enclosed equipment. It is not, by itself, proof of damage.
